RICHMOND QUALIFIES FOR LA’S SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT RACE
(New Orleans, LA.) Today, State Representative Cedric Richmond (D-New Orleans) qualified for the August Democratic primary for Louisiana’s Second Congressional District.
Representing eastern New Orleans for the past 11 years, Richmond has been instrumental in many important issues that have faced the state legislature. He created the State New Market Tax Credit program, which spurred over $250 million in investments in Louisiana’s devastated areas after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. He also secured funding for small business incubators and grant programs. As a member and Co- Chairman of the Legislative Audit Advisory Committee, Richmond was vital in ending the waste and misappropriation of funds in the Orleans Parish School System. Most recently, Rep. Richmond fought vigorously for the rights of property owners in the 2010 legislative session.
“The Second Congressional District deserves strong leadership - leadership with the courage to stand up for the best interest of our community,” says Richmond.
Richmond understands the struggles of the Second Congressional District and supports the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that saved our economy by creating and saving 3.5 million American jobs and provided tax cuts for 95% of American workers. He walked the halls of Congress to lobby for health care reform, the historic legislation that put families and small business owners before powerful insurance companies. He will continue to fight and support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which champions women’s right to equal pay for equal work.
Richmond is a distinguished graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Morehouse College, Tulane School of Law and the Harvard University executive program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Richmond has received contributions from the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, former U.S. Senator John Breaux. , House Majority Whip James Clyburn, Congressman Bennie Thompson, and Congressman Kendrick Meek. He also has the support of several Orleans and Jefferson parish leaders, New Orleans Councilperson Cynthia Hedge Morrell, State Representatives Girod Jackson III and Walt Leger, Civil District Court Clerk Dale Atkins, and Gretna Chief of Police Arthur Lawson and many more.
