Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District had gone Democratic for more than a century before Republican Joseph Cao won the seat in 2008. Democrats are pinning their hopes on Richmond, 37, to take it back. A Tulane-educated lawyer raised by a single mother, Richmond pushed legislation to rebuild Louisiana businesses and schools after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

Teaching and coaching college baseball.

What's the most overlooked issue facing America these days?
High school dropout rates nationally — Not enough is being done on this issue. There are a lot of stats and a strong correlation between dropout rates and crime as well as poverty. Keeping our kids engaged and in school must become a national priority.

Where do you see yourself professionally in five years?
As the senior Democratic congressman from Louisiana who has earned a reputation as a skilled lawmaker that delivers for Louisiana.
